Communicating: Non verbal language

Image
Body  language is a part of  nonverbal language . It includes things like stance, gestures, facial expressions, and even small things that are barely perceptible like a brief shrug of the shoulder or nod of the head. We frequently communicate both bodily and verbally and an estimated 70% of what we communicate may be nonverbal. Nonverbal language is an even bigger category, which includes things like tone of voice. There are many ways to learn to interpret  body  language but it must be understood that these are frequently specific to a culture. For instance in the US people wave good bye with the palm facing the person they’re waving to, and the fingers may open and close. In other cultures, waving goodbye may occur with the hand palm up to the sky, and the fingers opening and closing. To people in the US, this might look like a gesture asking someone to approach rather than a wave goodbye. Still, since most of us live in one area where...

Positive Psychology.

Image
What is Positive Psychology? Positive Psychology is one of the newest  branches of psychology  to emerge. This particular area of psychology focuses on how to help human beings prosper and lead healthy, happy lives. While many other branches of psychology tend to focus on dysfunction and abnormal behavior, positive psychology is centered on helping people become happier. Martin Seligman  and  Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi  describe positive psychology in the following way: "We believe that a psychology of positive human functioning will arise that achieves a scientific understanding and effective interventions to build thriving in individuals, families, and communities." George Orwell - 1984

Definitely one of my favourite books and also one of my favourite to work with students. It's wonderful to see how they get hooked into the story and then start looking "outside" the story and find coincidences in our present world. Again, another Prezi  presentation with a lot of information regarding 1984 society. Intended to share before, while, and after reading.  Hope you enjoy it!

A Bit of Everything

Quite often, while reading or searching the web I come across great material I think could come in handy for different courses or projects. Many times I´ve saved articles, webpages, etc to different apps and tools; the truth is it ended up lost or totally forgotten. This time I´m using Prezi , so far I find it really useful. I can link topics as I like or need and have it close at hand ever time I open my account.

What´s in a generation?

Image
gladys l. on Dipity . "Baby Boomers. Millennials. Generation Z. Although some records exist nearly as far back as America’s beginnings of people naming the generations, these three generations are likely the most well-known today, although where one ends and the next begins is controversial. They come with their own stereotypes: the Baby Boomers don’t understand technology, the Millennials—people aged 18-34, according to a Forbes article from 2013—are entitled know-it-alls who spend more time on social media than on work, and Generation Z, people aged 17 and younger, is the “9/11” generation. According to Forbes, the Millenials are optimistic, but the people of Generation Z are realistic. The Millenials grew up in a world where they could walk to the gate to watch their grandparents’ planes land when they came to visit; Generation Z never knew a world without the fear of terrorism, without strict security and television shows where detectives chase down bomb threats ...

Have you read any stories by Robert Fulghum?

Image
Just by chance, many years ago, I came across a really nice story to use with students and teachers. It´s one of those stories you never tire of.   I´ve used it extensively both in class and in seminars.  All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten  by Robert Fulghum - an excerpt from the book, All I Really Need To Know I Learned in Kindergarten All I really need to know I learned in kindergarten. ALL I REALLY NEED TO KNOW about how to live and what to do and how to be I learned in kindergarten. Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate-school mountain, but there in the sandpile at Sunday School. These are the things I learned: Share everything. Play fair. Don't hit people. Put things back where you found them. Clean up your own mess. Don't take things that aren't yours. Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody. Wash your hands before you eat. Flush. Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you. Live a balanced life - learn some a...

Songs & Stories

I´m sure you must have heard about Adele. She´s a wonderful singer with a unique voice.  Her full name is Adele Laurie Blue Adkins and she was born to single mother Penny Adkins on 5 May 1988 in Tottenham, North London. She is estranged from her Welsh father Mark Evans. She started singing at the age of four years and has stated the Spice Girls heavily influenced her decision to start. She came from a non-musical family but a very supportive one. Adele said that her mother used to set up a stage show for her in their own home with Adele being the performer and her mother's friends being the audience.  One of the UK’s best-selling singer/songwriters and having taken some time away from the music industry after the birth of her first child, Angelo, she is now working on her third album.  She  has broken through the music industry at a relatively young age, particularly owing it to her distinctive voice.  Would you like to   read more So...
